The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees was established on December 14, 1950 by the United Nations General Assembly to ensure that everybody has the right to seek asylum and find safe refuge, having fled violence, persecution, war or disaster at home.

Since 1950, UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency has been taking the lead in protecting people forced to flee wars and persecution around the world, providing life-saving aid including shelter, food and water to ensure their basic safety, rights and dignity.
